When it comes to losing weight quickly, some people turn to fad diets that promise quick results using dubious methods.

These diets are typically low in calories, limit many healthy foods, and require strict adherence to strict rules, such as eating only one food.
Even though any type of low-calorie diet can result in rapid weight loss, fad diets that promote the use of unnecessary — and even dangerous — rules raise serious concerns.
The pineapple diet is a fad diet that has been used to lose excess body fat since the 1970s.
I describe the pineapple diet and why it is not a healthy way to lose weight.
Sten Hegeler, a Danish psychologist, developed the pineapple diet, also known as the “Sexy Pineapple Diet.”
In 1970, Hegeler and his wife, Inge, published “The Sexy Pineapple Diet.” The diet promised to help people lose weight and improve other aspects of their health, such as sexual vitality.
The diet consists of eating nothing but pineapple for two days a week, followed by five days of normal eating.
According to some sources, the plan allows you to eat other foods on the two pineapple-only days as long as the total calories are less than 500.
Keep in mind that the entire book is not available online, and there isn’t a lot of information available about foods to eat, rules, diet length, and other recommendations.
According to Hegeler, the diet was not based on any scientific evidence. The author simply liked pineapple, so he thought it would be a good idea to create a diet based on eating a lot of pineapple.
According to online sources, most people who follow this diet do so for 2-7 days, but some people do so for several weeks until they reach their “goal” weight.
Other pineapple-based diets and “cleanses” promoted online, in addition to the original Sexy Pineapple Diet, involve eating nothing but pineapple for 2-7 days.
How to follow the pineapple diet
The Sexy Pineapple Diet requires you to eat only pineapple for two days per week. It is unclear whether the days must be consecutive.
You’ll eat normally the other five days. Again, no specific recommendations from the book are available, so it’s unclear what type of diet Hegeler advised on the five non-pineapple days.
Other foods are permitted during the two pineapple days, according to some sources, but it is unclear which foods are permitted.
According to some sources, if you’re allergic to pineapple, the book recommends eating apples, pears, or bananas instead.
Other pineapple-based diet plans recommend consuming oats, yoghurt, lean proteins, and a lot of pineapple.
Some versions of the pineapple diet require you to eat nothing but pineapple for 2-7 days. Other than pineapple, no other foods are permitted on these diets.
The Sexy Pineapple Diet suggests eating only pineapple for two days per week. However, according to some sources, it also allows for other low-calorie foods, though it is unclear which foods are recommended.
A person who follows the Sexy Pineapple Diet eats normally the other five days of the week.
Other pineapple-based fad diets advise consuming only pineapple for two to seven days.
This means you can’t eat anything else besides pineapple.
You’ll be eating pineapple for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if you decide to follow one of these extreme pineapple-only diets.
Healthy whole foods like eggs, vegetables, nuts, seeds, fish, and grains will be off-limits.
Will it help you lose weight?
It is completely unnecessary to eat nothing but pineapple for two to seven days in order to lose weight.
Of course, limiting your calorie intake in any way, including unhealthy ones, will help you lose weight.
For example, if you’re used to consuming 2,000 calories per day and then go on a 5-day diet consisting entirely of pineapple, you’ll consume significantly fewer calories, resulting in a calorie deficit.
One cup (165 g) of cubed pineapple contains only 82.5 calories. Assume you eat 6 cups (990 grammes) of pineapple per day, with 2 cups (330 grammes) at each meal. This translates to 495 calories, which is extremely low.
A typical meal may contain 500 calories or more, depending on your energy requirements
Any diet that drastically reduces calories and creates an extreme calorie deficit will result in weight loss.
This does not, however, imply that losing weight through such restrictive methods is safe or effective for long-term weight maintenance.
Furthermore, if you follow a diet that severely restricts calories, you will almost certainly regain any weight lost as soon as you resume your normal dietary pattern.
Journalists who tried the Sexy Pineapple Diet and documented their results lost 0-2.2 pounds (1 kg) in one week.
However, you can lose weight in a healthy way that is based on scientific research and does not involve eating only one food for an extended period of time.
Finally, there is no proof that the Sexy Pineapple Diet, or any other pineapple-based fad diet, is safe or effective for weight loss.
The diet’s creator, Heleger, even admitted that the diet is not based on sound medical advice. He devised the scheme simply because he liked eating pineapple.
Verdict: Is it a good idea to try the pineapple diet?
To lose weight, you do not need to follow a strict diet. Following any diet or cleanse that recommends drastically reducing calories, eating only one food, or eliminating entire food groups is not a good idea.
Even if you are tempted to try a diet that promises quick weight loss, you can lose body fat by sticking to safe, evidence-based plans that involve making long-term dietary and lifestyle changes that leave you feeling deprived.
If you want to lose weight, you should create a small calorie deficit by avoiding or limiting your consumption of sugary beverages, ultra-processed foods such as fast food, and fried foods.
